Discovering Namhae: Korea's Hidden Island Drive

While Jeju gets most of the island road trip attention, Namhae Island (남해도) quietly offers something arguably more special: a relatively undiscovered loop through some of the most picturesque landscapes on the entire Korean peninsula. Connected to the mainland by the iconic Namhae Bridge and the Changseon-Samcheonpo Bridge, the island is entirely drivable and rewards those who take their time.

Route Overview

  • Total loop distance: Approx. 100–130 km (full island perimeter)
  • Recommended duration: 1–2 days
  • Starting point: Namhae Town (남해읍) — cross via Namhae Bridge from Hadong or via Noryang Bridge from Goseong
  • Road condition: Excellent — two-lane coastal roads, well-maintained

The Drive: Key Highlights

Namhae Bridge (남해대교)

Your entrance to the island sets the tone immediately. The Namhae Grand Bridge, built in 1973, spans the narrow strait in a single elegant arch. Pull over at the rest area on the approach for a photo — the bridge framed against the island mountains behind is a classic shot.

Garraok Terraced Rice Fields (다랭이마을)

One of Korea's most photographed landscapes: dozens of tiny terraced rice paddies cascading down a steep hillside to the sea. The village of Garraok (다랭이마을) sits at the top. The best views are from the road just above the village, looking down over the terraces to the blue water below. In spring the paddies are vivid green; in late summer they turn gold.

Boriam Hermitage (보리암)

A short but steep drive up Geumsan Mountain (금산) leads to this cliffside Buddhist hermitage with panoramic views of the southern sea and hundreds of scattered islands. The road is narrow and winding — exercise care on the upper section, especially when passing oncoming traffic.

Songjeong Beach & German Village (독일마을)

The German Village (독일마을) is an unexpected delight — a neighborhood of European-style homes built by Korean workers who emigrated to Germany in the 1960s and later returned. The red-roofed houses on the hillside above the bay are photogenic and the area has several good guesthouses and restaurants.

Changseon Island Sub-Loop

Cross the small bridge from Namhae onto Changseon Island for a quieter sub-loop through fishing communities and bamboo groves. Less visited than the main island highlights, but excellent for those wanting to escape the weekend crowds.

Where to Eat & Stay

Namhae is famous for garlic (마늘) — it appears in everything. Look out for garlic pork belly (마늘 삼겹살) at local restaurants. Fresh seafood is equally excellent; the coastal pojangmacha stalls in Noryang Port sell grilled shellfish and raw fish at very reasonable prices.

For accommodation, the German Village area has pensions (펜션) with sea views that book out fast on weekends. Namhae Town has more practical motel options if you just need a base.

Practical Tips

  1. The Boriam road is too narrow for large vehicles — leave campervans or large SUVs at the base parking area.
  2. Namhae is busiest in July–August and during autumn foliage (October–November) — a spring visit offers beauty without crowds.
  3. Fuel up in Namhae Town before heading around the island — gas stations on the coastal loop are few.
  4. Allow at least 2 hours for Garraok and Boriam combined — these spots deserve a slow visit, not a quick stop.

Combining Namhae with a Wider Southern Coast Trip

Namhae sits perfectly on a broader southern coast loop. Pair it with Tongyeong (통영) to the east — Korea's "Naples," a stunning harbor city — and Hadong (하동) to the west, home to Korea's oldest tea plantations along the Seomjin River. Together, these three destinations make a superb 3–4 day road trip from Busan or Gwangju.
