Why Jeonju Belongs on Every Korean Road Trip

Tucked into North Jeolla Province in the southwestern heartland of Korea, Jeonju (전주) is a city that rewards slow travel. Its historic Hanok Village — a preserved neighborhood of over 700 traditional Korean wooden houses — sits just minutes from the city center. But it's the drive to get there, through rolling countryside and agricultural plains, that sets the tone for what Jeonju is all about: a quieter, more rooted Korea.

Getting There by Road

  • From Seoul: Approx. 200 km via Honam Expressway (호남고속도로) — around 2.5 hours without traffic.
  • From Busan: Approx. 210 km via Namhae Expressway connecting to the 25 — around 2.5 hours.
  • From Gwangju: Only 60 km — a quick 45-minute drive, perfect as part of a Jeolla Province loop.

The approach through North Jeolla's farmland — especially in late spring when rice paddies are bright green — is beautiful in its own right.

What to See & Do in Jeonju

Jeonju Hanok Village (전주한옥마을)

The undisputed centerpiece. Walk the alleyways between traditional hanok homes, many of which now operate as guesthouses, cafes, and craft shops. The village feels authentic without being a museum — people actually live here. Rent a hanbok (traditional dress) for ₩15,000–₩20,000 and wander the streets; it's a beloved local tradition.

Gyeonggi-jeon Shrine (경기전)

A beautifully preserved Joseon-era shrine housing a portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty. The wooded grounds are peaceful and worth at least an hour of exploration.

Nambu Traditional Market (남부시장)

A bustling indoor market with stalls selling local produce, street food, and crafts. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Night Market section comes alive with independent vendors and live music.

Jeonju Bibimbap

Jeonju is the birthplace of bibimbap, and eating a proper stone-pot bibimbap here is a near-spiritual experience. Dozens of renowned restaurants cluster around the Hanok Village — look for ones with queues of locals, not tourists, out front.

Where to Stay

Staying in a traditional hanok guesthouse within the village is highly recommended. Many offer ondol (heated floor) rooms, shared courtyards, and traditional breakfast. Book well in advance for weekends. If you prefer more comfort, modern hotels are plentiful 10–15 minutes away by car.

Combining Jeonju with a Wider Route

Jeonju works brilliantly as a hub for exploring the wider Jeolla region by car:

  • Maisan Provincial Park (마이산): 30 minutes east — twin rocky peaks rising from the valley floor, otherworldly scenery.
  • Sunchang: 50 minutes south — famous for gochujang (red pepper paste) and a relaxed countryside village atmosphere.
  • Buan & Saemangeum coast: 1 hour west — tidal flats, cycling paths, and open skies.

Parking in Jeonju

The Hanok Village area has several designated car parks on its perimeter — don't attempt to drive into the village lanes themselves. The main Hanok Village parking lot off Girin-daero is the easiest option and charges standard rates. Arrive early on weekends as it fills quickly.

Jeonju is the kind of place that makes you slow down, linger over a meal, and remember why you came to Korea in the first place. It's an essential stop on any road trip through the south.
